Since November 2015 Hamish has been building housing near Sandy Park. He is an apprentice Bricklayer working towards his L2 trowel occupations qualification. He works on groundworks, brick and blockwork, concreting and screeding, and has day release once a week to attend Exeter College.

But before then Hamish had a rocky start and was not in education, employment or training. Hamish joined the first cohort of ‘REEP’, the fore-runner of BEEP, for young people with often complex needs who were struggling to find work. During the two week intensive programme Hamish met Kieron his mentor who then worked with him to develop his plan for the future, and offered regular ongoing confidence building and practical support during his transition into his apprenticeship/employment.

Hamish has made the very positive and significant transition from being workless and suffering a significant lack of self-confidence into a skilled trade within the construction industry. ‘Construction’ is considered a tough work environment but one where skilled trades are highly regarded and in demand. Locally the construction industry is suffering skills shortages which Hamish is now helping to fill.

For Hamish the REEP experience has been life-changing. As an individual he has a secure means of supporting himself, opportunities for career progression within Construction and sufficient confidence to begin to maximise opportunities. He is proving his potential when he and others believed he had none.

Hamish would very probably still be labelled as NEET without REEP. But through his own perseverance in overcoming adversity and in ‘going the extra mile’ even when frequently faced with challenging situations and without the benefit of more usual support Hamish has made huge progress. He has set himself the long-term goal of building his own house and making his own way. He is a role model for other young people in the workplace. His mentor Kieron says “even though he has been through a tough time he always puts other people first”.

Hamish has met HRH Prince Harry, featured with his employers on BBC Spotlight and has just been awarded ‘Exeter Achiever of the Year’ by Karime Hassan Exeter City Council’s Chief Executive. His achievements are an inspiration to us all.

Hamish Scott-Godley attended a BEEP programme last year and has just been awarded the “Exeter Achiever of the Year Award” at the recent disability confident event at Reed Hall, Exeter University.

Hosted by Pluss, Devon County Council, Westward Pathfinder and the Exeter and Heart of Devon, Employment and Skills Board, the event is a national campaign which encourages employers to be positive about the skills that everyone can bring to the workplace.

Over 80 businesses attended and the keynote speaker was Michael Caines, he knows only too well what it takes to succeed, having lost an arm in a an accident many years ago. Michael has grown up in Exeter and is passionate about the area and what it has to offer.

Hamish now works for Redrow homes in Exeter, he was unable to attend in person to pick up the award as he needed to be on the building site at 7.30am that morning and did not want to let his fellow workers down. This epitomises the work ethic Hamish has adopted, the BEEP programme enabled him to realise his ambition and through an Exeter College Apprenticeship he is now in employment and contributing to the local community.

The event also saw other delegates pick up awards and it was closed with music from the fabulous BBC2 Choir of the Year Semi Toned.

The pictures show Karime Hassan, CEO of Exeter City Council, presenting Hamish’s award to Mike Blakeley of Exeter College.

Ben Bradshaw, MP for Exeter, met with young people and their mentors and employers at an event hosted by Everys Solicitors in Exeter to learn more about the Business Powering Employment Programme (BEEP). He said “It was great to meet Aaron and Matt and find out how BEEP is helping them. It’s really fantastic that they have moved into work and training and are doing so well, as they continue to receive support from their mentors”.

Mentee Matt Baker, 20, from Exeter, said: “The mentoring has been brilliant for me. I meet with Llewellyn quite regularly and it’s pushing me forwards. I’m at Exeter College, and know what I want to do next, to get the qualifications I need to help students with learning difficulties. I’ve got short term and longer term goals and that’s thanks to BEEP. It would be great if the programme keeps growing so more people can benefit.”

Llewellyn Nicholls, Head of Business Development and Marketing at Everys Solicitors and Matt’s mentor, said: “It’s been hugely rewarding being a mentor to Matt.  He has developed hugely over the past few months. His initial goals have now been realised and he’s firmly on the career ladder. His determination has really shone through.”

The programme (initially called REEP) used Rugby World Cup 2015 legacy funds and generous support from Exeter and Heart of Devon Employment and Skills Board partners but is now being expanded to support more young people across Devon. Support from businesses across Devon is needed if the programme is to reach its potential. Companies can support BEEP through a range of partnership opportunities, including sponsorship and mentor training, which supports the personal development of employees through becoming a mentor

REEP TO BEEP

2015 RUGBY WORLD CUP TO INSPIRE YOUNGSTERS AND BOOST JOB PROSPECTS

Young people struggling to find work had the opportunity to boost their job prospects thanks to a Rugby World Cup 2015 inspired project set up by Exeter City Council and Exeter and the Heart of Devon, Employability and Skills Board.

This two-week REEP programme usesd sport to inspire 16-24 year olds, giving them new life skills and confidence to help them progress into the work place, an apprenticeship or further training.

Motiv-8sw have run similar initiatives in other parts of the UK and are delighted to bring this programme to the South West.

“This programme was extremely successful in helping young people discover what they want to do with their life and it empowers them to actually turn their thinking into action”

Phil Sampson, Director, Motiv-8sw

The programme saw selected young people engage in a practical and experiential way of learning which uses modern and well proven performance coaching techniques. It helped with self-esteem, self-confidence, motivation, communication and presentation skills, team work, goal setting and action planning and defining future vision and aspirations.

Cllr Rosie Denham, Exeter City Council’s Lead Councillor for Economy and Culture, has said:

“Sport can be a fantastic motivator which is why we’re focusing on supporting young people who have struggled to take that first step on their career ladder, building their confidence, skills and business know how”.
